Subject: RE: netbook
>>I agree with the Netbook discussion. I have an Asus Eee PC and like it very much. But I have noticed that they are calling the smaller ones Netbooks.
I didn't know if Psion had Patented the name Netbook or not?????<<
It's not possible to patent a name, only trademark it. To trademark a name, a company has to show prior use, but also has to show that the name does not have a wider significance; that's why Google were keen to trademark their name before it became too commonly used as a verb!!! I suspect also that the exact spelling may be important; the capital B in netBook could be a problem for Psion. A trademark is similar to a patent, in that it has to be applied for in every country/region where protection is sought; there is no worldwide trademark system, as far as I can tell. I suspect that Psion are going to come unstuck if they start suing all companies using the word netbook, as many of these companies (ie. amazon) have much deeper pockets. Also, none of the actual manufacturers seem to be using this term to describe their products!!
Anyway, end of lesson re. IP law.
A Happy New Year to all,
Cheers, Ian.
Sent from my E90 (and yes, the keyboard is still cr*p compared to any Psion).

Subject: netBook, laptop? What's in a name?
Hi!
Regarding the term 'netbook', Psion owns the TRADEMARK 'netBook' and are now said to besending out 'Cease & Desist' letters to assorted websites and manufacturers to stop them from using the word.
Some 'pseudo geeky' sites are already attacking Psion for this, so it probably won't take long before it reaches the mainstream media's attention...
Laptop/notebook....
As mnetioned, HP does indeed call theirs for notebooks instead of laptops, but I believe that is to avoid lawsuits in America. (Some bugger is bound to use it while going 'commando' and either burn something, or get certain hairs trapped in the fan...
The 'laptop' I could comfortably use in my lap was my Apple iBook 12" 1.33GHz as it very rarely got warmer than 55degrees(celsius)
Nice computer to carry around at only 2Kg, and with good battery life.
The 12" HP nc2400 my office equipped me with is the same size, weighs
less(1.2Kg), but is much warmer, and the fan is annoying...
Not ideal really...
Instead I've begun to bring both an Asus EEE900 and a Psion S3c. (The EEE for surfing and such, and the S3c for serious notetaking)
The S3c still brings out the occasional 'Ooh, is that a new computer? Where can I get one?' response...

Subject: drug database on psion
I love the 5mx but as I am a doctor, the dealbreaker for me was the lack of an updated drug database that can be used on the Psion whereas WM/Palm/BB all have Epocrates as well as other databases available
I have looked extensively & found nothing for the PSion except an outdated BNF
A real pity as I used to keep anonymous notes on all my pts etc which was great for management

Subject: Surplus Psion Stuff
I will be moving house, and came across some old Psion gear while
packing. If anyone wants any of it, let me know. Some of this stuff
might suit someone either doing a Psion museum, or storing parts for
repairs. Most however is probably destined for the dust bin of history. Psion Presentation Maker 1.0 for Series 5, 3.5 floppy in original box Psion Blank plastic PCMCIA slot filler for netBook (several, not much
use that I can see)
Psion Parallel printer link for Series 5 3mx 3c Siena in box
Psion Parallel printer link for Series 5 3mx 3c Siena (takes 9v battery) Psion PC Card Modem Adaptor for Series 5 3mx 3c in box (not sure which
PCMCIA modems work with these after all this time)
Psion PC Card Modem Adaptor for Series 5 3mx 3c badly damaged battery
compartments, probably for parts only
Psion Series 5 PC Card Adaptor Plug Pack 6v 500mA (Australian plug)
(power pack for above PC Card Adaptor, if you are not using AA
batteries, also suits Psion 5).
PsiWin cable Psion to 9 pin RS232
PsiWin2 2.3 probably from Series 7
Sunpower UK plug DC Power supply for netBook (15v 1A, feels like
switchmode)

Subject: RE: MC218 Repair
Thank You Keith,
I appreciate your information about the firm in Toronto. I didn't realize
they were still in business. I used to, back in my old Series 3a and 5mx
days I corresponded all the time with Shiva as he has a web site or
discussion list, and he was always very helpful with anything Psion. It
appears he is still the Psion guy. I have contacted them, thanks for the
good information.
Thanks,
Bobby
