I am Chris from Psion Shop www.pulster.eu - I am selling the genuine
Psion Netbook (EPOC and PRO). Google canceled my Adwords for trademark
reasons as well. They do not believe I am selling the Psion product
itself. Google is the evil, believe me.

Subject: Psion 5 and Nintendo DS Lite
Hi,
I haven't posted here for a long time and indeed am no longer using my 5mx; after many years, I found an Asus Eee PC fulfilled the role well enough as well as giving me lots of other capabilities the Psion lacked - especially proper web browsing, wi-fi, etc. in a device that is still very light and portable.
I still think the Psions had the best designed OS and applications of any PDA and feel it's very sad that they have largely died - not because of the software but because Psion wasn't as good as designing and manufacturing hardware as it was at software; to be fair, I suppose it was also partly because screen and battery technology wasn't quite there in time for them.
My wife has recently got a Nintendo DS Lite. It's a small, clamshell device, slightly smaller than a Psion 5, which has two lovely bright clear colour screens, wi-fi, limited speech and handwriting recognition and a claimed 8 hours-on-a-charge battery life. And it's robust enough to survive being dropped (we've tried that already by accident).
Every time I see this, I think it shows what the Psion 5 could have evolved into if it had survived. I'd change the design making the upper screen larger (like on a Psion) and replace the lower screen with a keyboard, and then load it with EPOC32 and all the applications we like. It would be an absolutely outstanding machine that would knock spots off any of the other Palm or Windows based PDAs out there, in my opinion.
I shall always feel sad that Psion didn't realise earlier on that they were really a software company, and partner with one of the consumer electronics giants to design and make the attractive high quality hardware they needed to show off their software.

Chris,
If Paul Wright can't assist you, I'm in the UK and have a spare 5MX in working order.
Hope that helps.

Subject: IR Mobilephone as Modem
Just to clarify the use of IR on the Nokia N73.
The IR link for file transfer may require PIBeam etc ( I have never tried it ) BUT there is a separate MODEM application supplied on the phone which when run links to the Psion Mail application through the IR link.
Hope this helps.

Why not use a "Netbook" PC with the EPOC emulator ? You have then the best of the two worlds. It should works even with Linux and a Win emulator.

Re.: Netbook PC, Netbook Epoc or Netbook Pro...? - Unfortunately I believe that time has come to set yourself free from the EPOC machines and to look into the future and purchase a machine with the latest technology and connectivity. By all means keep your EPOC machines to use from time to time and for tasks like agenda, Jotters, Data bases etc., but for connectivity use the modern up to date machines. You can get them in almost all sizes and all prices. I don't see the advantage of getting a netBook Pro as it is also outdated. I still use my netBook (Epoc) and am typing this message on it, but mainly for the digest, the banking (ABP5) and accounting (Money). It stays on my desk, when I travel I take a laptop.
Sad, but that is the truth.
Best regards,
Itamar

Bobby,
I think you're out of luck, as all the later Nokia phones, AFAIK, use a different Infra Red protocol, which although it allows file transfer etc through 3rd party software such as PIBeam.
Simply, this allows a one time only transfer between your 5mx and your phone, but not a continuous on-demand IR flow as required by a modem.
Psion did release a successor to the Netbook, the Netbook Pro, which I found out just now with a bit of Googling, they released an updated IR driver for. I assume this is for the Windows CE onboard OS. Prob not much good for us Epoc dependent users.

I hope someone else can add some more info on this.

Peter
