The problem is nothing to do with password-protection, but rather the
fact that Word on EPOC is slightly buggy in certain circumstances
(usually involving the embedding of objects, such as a picture or
spreadsheet) the data stream can be written slightly wrongly, and this
prevents Word re-opening it.
(Actually it probably isn't Word itself that is buggy, but rather
something in EPOC's system of storing embedded objects, so it could
theoretically happen to a record in a Data file as well.)
So I would continue to password-protect your Word files, and just
remember to (a) keep several backups, and (b) avoid embedded objects
if possible. BTW, there was a free app to create an encrypted
"virtual drive" (forget it's name), which would be an alternative to
password-protected, but IMHO you risk loosing all the files it becomes
corrupted, plus backing-up is harder/slower.
