I dont think I suggested it would fit in your pocket and nor does Sony's web site. (Hell, my 5MX inside its case wouldn't fit in my pocket).

BUT, compared to any laptop and most netbooks, its probably the smallest fully-functioning standard PC you can currently buy. I was a Linux user before I was a Psion user, so for *me* the Sony P would make a nice, very portable Linux workstation (certainly much smaller and lighter than my HP Mini Note). Since I carry laptops in my backpack, I wasn't thinking about pocket use at all (my Nokia N810 currently occupies my pocket :-)

Ultimately, I want to write something similar to Psion Data that will run in Linux, on the N810 or on a mobile phone (Im very interested in the Palm Pre!).

The only device Ive seen that gets *close* to the 5MX form factor is the UMID mbook (which I posted about before):

http://www.midmoves.com/2009/03/umid-mbook-first-impressions/
There will NEVER be a replacement for the S5 or 5MX and Ive accepted that. Its ironic the whole netbook phenomena because it shows that the time is ripe right now for Psion to bring out a Linux-based device running Psion apps and just show how an instant-on long battery-life netbook SHOULD be built!

I have answered my own question on my DVD Player and my Eee PC for the most part.  I can see movies and it works fine for that.   But, as an example, I don't know how many of you get PDA Essentials magazine, I have a subscription here in the states--great magazine by the way, but they give a CD with different programs and trial programs and my DVD player on my Eee PC won't read that kind of or DVD with the data or things that are not movies.

I might be missing something and if so does anyone have suggestions please.

Thanks,
Bob

Subject: Transferring Contacts etc. from Axim to Nokia 9500

Hi All,

Perhaps someone could suggest a solution to my latest PDA problem. Some 2-3 years ago I purchased a Nokia Communicator 9500 as a 5MX replacement. Much as I tried, I could not get used to the small size of the keys, the narrow screen and the absence of a touch-screen. Besides, it was too different from the unforgettable 5mx. So I purchased an Axim (2 versions), which I have liked even less. While waiting for salvation in the form of a Nokia N97 or HTC's Touch Pro 2, I decided to bring the Nokia 9500 out of retirement. Problem is I need to transfer the data on the Axim, at least the Contacts and also the Agenda, to the Nokia 9500. I will be grateful for any suggestion.

Thanks

Bob

I don't have personal experience of connecting CDROM DVD drives to the EEPC but I can offer a couple of hints,
+ Try having the drive plugged before booting the EEPC (plug it in when the EEEPC is completely off)
+ When booted the CDROM /DVD drive will probably appear as a USB device so look for any USB drives that are connected, (so put a DVD disk in and try opening  and try 'exploring' any USB drives) + You may need an external power source for the CDROM /DVD drive as the USB socket may not have sufficient power

For info I 'upgraded' my EEEPC 901 to a customised version of Linux called eeebuntu
http://www.eeebuntu.org/I installed it off a USB stick and, for me, I find it preferable to the Asus (Xandros) linux and it worked straight 'out of the box'

Good Luck

Subject: Two problems: JB5StopGo and Psolly on the 5mx

On my current machine (which I have been using for about the past 6 months) I have noticed two problems which I have never previously experienced (over a number of years!):-

**JB5StopGo**
I have tried installing this invaluable utility several times, but each time I try running it, it comes up with an error message:

"Error in JBSTOPGO\CHECK
  Does not exist"

(whilst a flashing message at the bottom left of the screen says "Finding UIDs")

**Psolly**
This excellent freeware solitaire program has been one of my favourite recreations on my Psion ever since I upgraded to the Series 5 (in the last millennium!).
Every now and again (I estimate about once every hundred games or so) the screen stops responding.  This then needs a hard reset to restore touch screen function.  I have not identified any particular stage in a game, etc which might have led to this state.  (NB the hard reset would be much easier if JB5StopGo were working!!)

Any offers of explanation and/or solution?

All the best,

Kit

Girlfriend bought an Acer Aspire. Eee-style but with 160 GB HD. Atom speed acceptable. I would've kept Linux for its somewhat Apple-like flavourings (no idea beyond that), but she decided to stay in familiar territory. Her job is writing, she has (very) small hands and (relatively) big bags and she is thrilled. Even I, an early Mac follower, liked the look&feel of the hardware. Nothing like MX5 exists yet though, however this kind of machine comes about halfway, I'd say.

... I also have a Garmin (the yellow one). Good to know the Conrad usb 2
rs232 won't work. I wouldn't know where to buy another (I'm also in Germany)
and which. PsiWIN should also work under Parallels (which is quite fast on
Intel with Win XP and supports USB, network etc.), but the 232-USB cable
problem remains.

Leopard has proved quite hassle-free for everybody I know, so I guess you'll
have more time soon ;-)

... I seem to have the problem that in the Notes field of the Phone Book app
I have carriage returns. They seem to produce errors. I got Notes in an
Excel sheet, bu that's a bit umständlich when searching. Thanks also for the
links.

Hi Bob
I have an Eee running Linux and it recognizes everything I plug in on the
system tray, bottom right of the screen (though I admit I haven't used a CD-ROM  drive).

It is likely that the USB port doesn't have enough power to run  your external CD-ROM drive.  Have you tried plugging it in to a  separate power source?

Subject: Looking ro replace my Nokia 9500bigfoot)

Hi all,

Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement for my Nokia 9500. It is rather old now and has a failing hinge. Not sure if Nokia can ix and anyway, I feel I should move on.

Suggestions welcome. What something with a good screenI can read (eyes not wonderful). Also Wi-Fi and a camera for convnience. Lots of memory, or easy way of adding lots, because storing  and playing some music is good. Also need to be able to transfer my existing diary and contacts easily.

So it is another Nokia with keyboard (I like thos with proper keys) or should I head for the iPhone 3.0.

Thoughts and suggestions welocme.

Of course if any has a working 9500 to sell ... I could be interested.

Yours John.
