We have similar interests Austin.
I started out with a Garmin GPS-75, moved on to an eMap and then a 2610. But this came with USB only, so I had to move away from a Psion.
I started with a 3a and PsiGar + Mapper 3a.
I've recently been researching current GPSrs and sadly what I call 'technical' GPSrs are almost replaced by 'fashion driven' "wow that looks great" on first appearance.
I've just bought a new Garmin 76CSx. It has serial and USB and also runs City Navigator Europe NT.
The GPS-75 had track log features including a prompt when memory full or rotate and over write. I always used the beep when full, so that I could download to my Psions on days with a long log. The eMap lost this beep prompt and always overwrote. The 2610 was the same.
However the 76CSx can optionally save a daily track to the microSD card as long as you have spare capacity.
The date becomes part of the filename, so you don't have to download everyday. Very nice!
Comes with USB cable, but the serial cables are extra. I've bought the combined serial with 12 volt power cable.
Your 12 has similar chips to my 75, so slow. The 76CSx is much faster from switch on to lock.
I'm still looking for a replacement to the Palmtop route/street planning apps.

The (lemmon-yellow) eTrex works well with my Mxpro (Street & Route etc.).

at the bottom of this (now inactive) site, the Psion-to-rs232 wiring.

is a (diy if you prefer) cable kit Garmin-to-whatever.
The Digest archive also has some threads on Garmin and Cables.
Hope this helps.
