Subject: The life of a Li-ion battery

Dear all,

An interesting claim on the Dutch Wikipedia regarding Li-ion batteries. Apparently a Li-ion battery will deteriorate, be it charged or uncharged, used or unused, in a machine or still in its plaster. The chemistry will automatically change as a function of its age.
If the battery is fully loaded this will be 20% per year, but if you completely exhaust the battery it will be damaged.

This explains why laptop batteries have a max life time of 3 to 5 years. The article even advises to remove a battery from the laptop whenever it is connected to the power grid. The battery will easily reach temperatures above 25°C which will decrease its life time and this is of no use, because the laptop is connected to the power grid.
This is not valid for Psions as they do not heat up during use.

This is quite worrying.

No matter how many Psions we have in spare I have 2 netBooks, a 7Book and a mBook or how we take care of their batteries, finally the Psion's life shall be decided by the deterioration of Li-ion batteries.
The only option would be netBook Pro Li-ion batteries, which are slightly newer.

What are your opinions on this ?
I for one would like to continue using my netBooks until a hardware failure whatsoever. There are no other reasons for me to stop using them.

Yours truly,

Thomas van der Zijden
