Thanks for suggestions (below). Actually, I had better luck with installing one application (MobiReader) from a .sis file on my PC via PsiWin, rather than from a .sis file on my 5mx directly.

The reason I hadn't tried this sooner was that the PsiWin route was blocked when I clicked on a .sis file on my PC, Nokia Application Installer would open. I use this with my Nokia 9300i phone and I don't know how to disable it without uninstalling it.

Then I discovered that if instead I used Install New Program from the menu in the My Psion window, the installation process went ahead fine, without Nokia raising its ugly head.

However, I still failed to install BatGauge.

Thanks, Ajai I'd already tried that, but this often happens even if nothing is visibly running.

Yes, I did.

As I noted above, I failed with BatGauge (http://www.marukusu.de/psion/batgauge.htm),succeeded with MobiReader.
