Subject: 5mx Touch Screen

The touch screens on 2 of my 5mxs suddenly stopped working. I an maneuver around using the keyboard, but it's a bit awkward. I tried a soft, then a hard reset, but no change. I discovered that if I try to calibrate the screen, when I touch Point 1, I get a message that it's too far from Point 1.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong and how it can be fixed?

I believe I had this myself a couple of years ago. Altho I couldn't click on the screen to recalibrate "in one", I was able to click *somewhere* to get onto Point2 etc. When I then repeated the recalibration I could click closer to Point1. Think the next iteration fixed it. Never found out what caused it.

GoodLuck!

Re.: Visible BCC's I think it depends not only on the Psion email program but also on the provider you use. Some providers will allow the Psion email progam to send with invisible BCC's and other providers will not. In the past I did not have this problem but nowadays I need to use SmptAuth in order to succeed.

By the way, in the past I could send the complete digest in one email but some time ago my provider stopped this and now I can send up to 50 addressees at one time. They change their parameters all the time.

Best regards,

Itamar

Suggest you send your 5mxs to Pinnock Organiser Services who have access to Psion parts' suppliers and will return them as new!

Nice work with some good info!

I put the info on our (german spaeking) Psionwelt.net website maybe you will get some hits in the next hours/days.
We will also add it to our link list (http://www.psionwelt.net/kontakt/links.htm)

For backing up my 5mx, I simply use FastBackup to back the internal RAM to a special folder in the the CF disk, and then copy the whole CF disk on to my laptop hard disk using a compact flash PC card adapter in the PMCIA slot.  You can also get USB card readers which do the same job.

I have found this much easier (and quicker) than trying to use PsiWin (I am on XP, not Vista) anything that makes backing up a nuisance usually results in fewer backups and, sooner or later, major frustrations with data loss!

Good luck!

I'm not sure, but I have a vague memory that that this fault is caused by a screen cable fault (though not the usual fault).

Best wishes

PS great to hear from you again, Keith  I still use the Xbarset macro from time to time!

Nicky, I stopped using PsiWin for backup years ago, due to the ever
changing problems with the way various versions of Windows handles the
file date/time stamps.

I use FastBackup, which places a copy of all files from C: into a
folder on D:.  As it's name implies: it's fast.

Then a card reader on any Windows machine can quickly copy the whole
of the CF card to, in my case USB external drives.

I've also just recently bought a Western Digital network connected
drive that in the background copys files from my computers. So when
Windows crashes, I don't loose much.

For the person who is having trouble reconnecting his 5mx via PSIWIN.

Bring up task manager
Select the "Processes" tab
Click on the "Image Name" header so the processes are sorted
alphabetically.

Delete any of the following processes...

Copyany.exe
Elogerr.exe
Expdlg.exe
PRC32ENG.exe
Psconsv.exe
Wprntsvr.exe

I take it this was your wp software autocorrecting "v" to "version"?

Hello all,

To the point: I bought the subject software way back from the company but it won't run from a backup because it seems tied to the machine's ID number.  Its installation was from a protected downloadsite but it won't work anymore I still have the purchased download part on my PC.  TomTom doesn't seem to offer any support for Psion anymore They bought the company that sold me the Collins.

Has anyone found a work around for this? I

[Background story reading if you might be interested]
I'm back after a 5 year hiatus.  When my 5mx's screen went blank 2 months after the warrany was up in Sept. 2003, I felt that the Psion ship was taking on too much water & bailed out (How's that for a mixed metaphor!)
I went through a beautiful keyboard Dana with good battery life but way too slow switching between apps.  Then I settled on an 8.9" display Fugitsu P1120 in Sep. 2004, which is still fine but only has 6 hours useful battery life and even from hibernation it just takes too long to boot up. So last summer I bought 3 on UK ebay.  One was junk. The other I got PsionFlexi to replace the ribbon with one of his long lasting versions and the other an Ericsson MC218 is still running.  I plan to substitute back and forth through the ribbon replacements for as
long as they last.

Take care, Larry

Hi friends,

I have been using Diamond Mako from 2000; the batteries had started to give problems. And last year it crashed and I lost almost all the data (save the ones transferred to PC earlier), got the batteries replaced by ordinary Nickel Cadmium rechargable, and it is working okay eversince. I like the keyboard very much and I thought what it lacked was an LCD screen :-)

I want to go in for a new gadget. Should I select one of the 'smartphones'? I am a doctor by profession. What would you recommend?

Thanking you in advance,
