Handy Calendar doesn't seem to be available for Series 80 (ie, 9300i etc.) Can
anyone recommend solutions for the 9300i? (Before I upgrade > to the E71 r

Hi,

I was using my 9300i until it died recently and I used a great program called Powerdesk. It has two views, one being a launcher which is far superior to the built-in one, and it also has a calendar view which is accessed by pressing the bottom right button menu button.

It's pretty easy to configure and fast too. Plus whatever I was doing on the launcher the calendar was just a button press away. Oh, and it has a Windows like alt-tab feature by pressing control and spacebar which shows open programs you can then jump to.

Check it out here and see if it's any use to
you:

All the best,

Craig

I have a 70k calendar on my 9300i which is fast enough for me when making appointments.  You may need to reset or re-start your 9300 using iDesk or similar application.

Alternatively, you may need to delete the existing calendar file and start anew.  To do this:
1) you will need to close down Calendar completely the Exit button in Calendar will not do this.  You need the task list in option 1 of any pop up menu and use the End task button.
2) Find the calendar file in c:\system\data folder and rename the calendar file or delete it
3) Re-start Calendar which then opens a new calendar file.

You may find my MaM Calendar macro
at
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/FileNote/useful in extending some of the functions of the S80 calendar.  I have not used the S60 calendar, but it would generally seem to be less powerful than the S80 version which in turn is less powerful than the EPOC version.

Best wishes,
Martin O'Neill

No, M$ had not fixed the date problem at least as far as XP is concerned (I don't use Vista or Windows 7 but suspect the problem remains).  This subject has been extensively discussed in the past and there is a Psion program that I believe might help, called AlarmPlus but I never tried it.

The problem is not restricted to how Windoze interacts with Psion either because, at bi-annual clock change Windoze changes the timestamp of all files that reside on online NTFS drives at the time, so if you have 3 connected hard drives their timestamp is changed resulting in (for example) photo files claiming to have been created an hour before or after they were actually taken!  If you have duplicate files on an offline folder (e.g. a backup disk in your safe place), or even on an online device that is not NTFS (CD, ZIP, Compact Flash) these will not be changed so the next time you come to sync them they will show up as different and will require a full backup.  This will always be a pain because M$ means it to happen this way I cannot fathom why but there's evidence that it is intentional in that if you reset your computer's clock as you travel across time zones, that appointment you fixed for 9AM before you left home changes to a different time in Outlook as you do this is insane.  Regular users of Laplink will also have the same issue I use a CF card to carry personal files and twice a year I have to completely replace them with the "date changed" versions on the computer.  I could go on but suffice to say that Psion never had this problem because it deals with time correctly and anticipated travel across time zones and daylight saving; M$ never did.

There is a detailed article that looks at some of the issues here: www.peterdonis.net/computers/computersarticle3.html and some more sympathetic explanation here: www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1612735,00.asp and here: www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1736242,00.asp however there was an older article that compared Psion, Unix, Linux, Macintosh and Windows together but I can no longer find it.

What about the twice a year full backup when Windows does the daylight >> saving changes?
....
I realized after I wrote my post that I'm almost never interested in the > timestamps on files, which gives people such a lot of hassle so my
experience will be irrelevant to them.

And regarding the full-backup problem the funny thing is that I don't > recall running into it, but I don't know why, so I can't be a lot of
help!

There were two problems.  The first problem was that the next
incremental PsiWin backup after the summertime change did not work, causing a _full_ backup to occur.  Most noticeable with a large number
of files.  This was because Windows did not implement date/time stamps properly, so PsiWin thought that all files had changed as their
date/time was changed by one hour.

The other problem was with digital cameras.  I used a Psion to
transfer pictures from my camera small size CF card to a larger CF
card in a Psion while out & about.

Later, I discovered that the file time changed by 1, 2 or 3 hours,
when transferred to various versions of Windows.  It was not exactly
an hour but a few seconds off a full hour.

Alan.
