Everything was going along just fine, then decided to do all the update
downloads suggested by the eee (linux machine) on the update utility.
After successfully doing most of the updates, one blew away my internet
connections. Now it hangs up on "initialing" screen.
Just about ready to give up and dump Linux and set it up as a Windows
machine. At least I know how to install a program onto a Windows machine
Have tried to install Scribus (to replace or be an adjunct to Publisher)
and no good.
Have tried to install a small Agenda program and no good.
Any eee/Linux experts?
Finally got around to installing the emulator on my new Windows 7 PC.
It works fine. Now I have to try and remember how to get a few
3rd-party apps to load - mainly Crypto and BikLog5.
I have the wins version of Crypto, but after putting the .sis file on
the emulator's D drive, when I try to run it, I always get a corrupt
answer. Same with BikLog5. I had copied those apps from my backup to
the emulator. Maybe I should delete them on the emulator then run the
..sis files.

Jaap,
As someone who has used epoc emulator on both XP SP2/SP3 and puppy
linux (eee 900), I salute your how-to and
your helpful links. Since the epoc Data app remains world-class
(especially given the limited database choices
in linux), I've used emulator for databases as soon as I learned wine.
Damien's custom displays were the cake and your site is the schlag.
Nicely done,
Jake

Many providers will routinely block outgoing SMTP connections unless the
connection is coming from their mail servers (a move designed to stop
compromised computers sending out spam). So you would have to change your
outgoing settings to use whatever mail server the provider you're using
has available on its network.
Another option, is to use a server that uses a different port number (587
is frequently used) to get round filtering of port 25 traffic. But again,
to stop spammers, most mail servers will not relay your email unless its
coming from their network, so often SMTP authentication is required (this
is what smtpAuth does I imagine). Of course, this assumes you have an
account on that server which you can use. An older scheme to authenticate,
is to use what's called POP-before-send, where the act of POPing your mail
off the server, allows you to also relay through that server for a limit
time.
So the short answer is to find out if your Internet provider has SMTP
auth available on its mail server, hopefully not on port 25, so you can
relay through it (if port 25 is blocked). Or find out if your mobile
provider has a mail server available to relay through.

Having in the last Digest read my own and Japp's postings and visited Att.: Craig Price Att.: Richard Haxworth
Japp's website (well done, Jaap) I thought I'd mention how I make PDF
files.
On XP I have the PDF995 print driver installed.
I use it to keep copies of e-mails and webpages, as well as other items on XP.
Reading old e-mails and webpages can be a problem when over time the
programs in use change. The PDF format remains readable!
Also when I need to send a document from a Psion via e-mail, by
setting PDF995 as the default printer, documents from the Psion aren't
printed as usual on my XP connected laser printer, but are made into a
PDF.
Much better for converting a Psion Word document than converting it to M$ Word.

Subject: Windows XP,
Re.: Windows XP - From digest 1428, why can't you connect with XP ? It
works fine on my PC. The problem is you
need a serial connection to the computer and I suppose that's what you
means when you wrote you got the "USB
kit". It appears that not all kits from USB to serial work with the
Psions and if you look at the website of
the digest in the archives you will find more about it as I do
remember we had a discussion about this. If I am
wrong with my answer, sorry.

Re.: Psion 5mx pro and smtp - Hi there. Maybe a stupid question but
you do know that you need to change the
smtp address on your Psion to the smtp address of your mobile phone
provider in order to send out emails ?
Sorry if this was obvious for you.
Can you make it work in the UK with any other provider, landline or
mobile ? Could it be O2 blocked outgoing
emails on your phone for one reason or another ? Just a few thoughts.

Itamar
