Hi everyone,
At the risk of upsetting the Psion 'purists', I have just acquired
(VERY cheaply) a mint
condition NetBook Pro and would like to ask some questions about it.
I know these weren't available to the general public at the time and
also cost a whopping
=A31,000+ back in October 2003 but looking at the specification the seem
to bear more that a
passing resemblance to a 'modern Netbook' in its features, especially
with the touch screen now
being claimed as amazing in Windows 7.. like it is something that has
just been invented !
Anyway, back to the plot, or reason why I am writing this !
I know it uses Windows CE .NET 4.2, the forerunner to the Windows
Mobile 2003, WM5, WM6
operating systems, but my questions are :
1) Has anyone actually got one of these machines ?
2) What do they think of it ?
3) What programs do the use on it ?
(It came with a minimum of inbuilt ones, as it was supposed to be up
to companies what they put
on it)
4) Are there any programs that took advantage of the 800 x 600 screen
resolution ?
(Similar to last question I suppose)
It does seem to be a forgotten machine mainly because it wasn't
available to the general public
and also even though it has the Psion name, it isn't a TRUE Psion
because it doesn't run the
EPOC operating system.
Any help/comments would be appreciated.
Regards,
Steve
Hi Itama,
Thanks for this. I'll have a look on the website.
I actually got the USB to Serial kit from Expansys but they won't help
me. Oh well!
Thanks again,
Craig

Jim, I have had an asus 701 for about 1.5 years. I finally learned to
never, ever update any of
the stuff that is suggested. Since I started doing that (never
updating), I've had no problems!
I feel stupid that it took a year and a half to realize, but linux is
not a mac OSX or a Psion
OS. The new kernals and updates just don't match for our machines, I
guess. Also, I learned
that the wikipedia instructions for cleaning useless programs to save
space are very good. So,
is the eeeubuntu site (I use eeeubuntu standard). Probably should
take this off line on this
Psion listserver. But it's a great substitute for Psion mbooks except
for the lack of Agenda!
Good luck. TG
Hi there,
There is a program called "PdfPrinter" from the company MBRAIN
SOFTWARE, who also have PdfPlus,
etc. I use PdfPlus on my Netbook a lot, don't have PdfPrinter yet, but
it should work from any
Psion program as another printing option. Then you get a pdf file
instead of printing it to
paper. Should work from any application, Word, Data, etc. It is
shareware though as far as I
know, but am planning to buy it.
Greetings from Austria: Balazs
Thanks Ajai and Itmar for further clarifying the smtp difficulties on
Psion 5mx. I'll have a word with o2 to see what they come up with.
All best,
Richard Haxworth.

Thanks to a tip from Colin Messer I now have Psion Presentation Maker
working to and from my PC
using Microsoft Office 2007 with Powerpoint in compatability mode
(Office 97-2003) which
Powerpoint selects automatically.
The key is to have Powerpoint actually running on the PC ( running XP)
when you run the PSIWIN
converter on the file exported from the Psion Presentation Maker.
So again the 10 year old software still works in todays environment.
Presentation Maker has some limitations eg Black and White only and
limited graphics but it is
very good for straightforward slides needed in a hurry.
It can be downloaded fron PScience5.
See tobidog.com for Review paper 2 on PGP.

John
Hi Jim,
I guess you're running the pre-installed Linux distro - probably
Xandros. IMO that is crap and I
suggest that you replace it with another Linux distro such as Eeebuntu, whi=
ch
is specifically made for the Asus eee. It runs very good, is stable
and reliable. Visit
http://www.eeebuntu.org/
I have an Acer Aspire One which runs the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR)
9.10. It runs like a dream.
I have experimented with a lot of distroes, but UNR 9.10 is far the best so=
far.
Installing programs in Linux are not that difficult. Most of the
programs can be installed from
the pre-configured repositories and adding additional repositories is easy.=
But
installing a program from the Internet may be a challenge if you have
to compile it yourself.
I also use Scribus and I prefer it over Publisher. Scribus and
Publisher is not compatible.
Linux is not that bad - you just have to find the right distro and get
to know it. Please give
Eeebuntu a try and I think you'll be surprised.
