*  I have been trying to write a little utility application in OPL to *  turn off the sound on my 9300i using the following code:

*  INCLUDE "system.oxh"

*  PROC One:
*  SySetSoundEnabled(0)
*  ENDP

*  However, this does not seem to work. What am I doing wrong?  On the *  FileNote forum, Edo has tried this code and confirms that it does not *  work either - possible due to some error in the OPL runtime.  Is Arjen *  around on the digest or is there anyone else who may be able to help.

Hello Martin,

Rolf Vonau made a little program for me.
Now I can set the 9300i by pushing one button from 'normal' to 'meeting'. But you can choose any type of setting.
It runs fine, except when FileNote is in the foreground.

Regards,

Kees.

Hi Martin

Still around but mostly lurking. I haven't worked on the runtime in
over two years, since switching to an E90 and subsequently to an
iPhone. Between family and work there's not much time left to spend
hobbying on OPL, but if there's a bug in the runtime it needs to be
fixed. I'll check it out over the holidays and get back to you on this
issue as quickly as possible. Luckily I still have a 9500 to test
things with, but I need to get the development environment up and
running again.

Happy holidays.

Best regards

Arjen

Subject: CF Cards

I use a SanDisk 512MB CF card in my netBook and all my 5mx series Psions. I now have a Windows 7 desktop machine - sorry Aj. :-)

Alastair - I don't know anything about defragging a flash card with Windows 7, or any other Windows OS for that matter. I've never needed to try that.

My only problem with Windows 7 is that when I installed PsiWin 2.3.3 it never put that "MyPsion" icon on the desktop. I've heard of another person who got that icon. I think it was because he has the 32-bit OS and I have the 64-bit one. That means when I connect the Psion to the PC I don't see the Psion drives in Explorer. It's not a real problem for me as I can work around it.

One other thing - not a problem. When I put the 5mx CF card into the card reader I get the usual window asking me if I want to open it. However when I put the netBook's CF card in I first get a window which asks if I want to scan and fix the drive. It gives you 2 options: Scan and fix (recommended), This will prevent future problems when copying files to this device or disc; Continue without scanning. I always select to continue without scanning. Then I get the usual window about opening it. Don't know why there's a difference in the 2 cards. As far as I remember I formatted both new cards in their Psion some years ago.

I know most of you don't like Windows, but I'm a happy camper. Windows 7 is pretty slick as far as I'm concerned.

BTW, can't remember if I posted this or not, but I had one of the 5mx ribbons go and sent it to PsionEx in the UK. Works well again. Also, 2 years ago while cycling along the Main River in Germany, my bike tipped over, my SLR camera and 5mx tumbled down onto some rocks at river's edge, and the 5mx keyboard popped out. Everything worked but I was unable to get the keyboard back into its slots. Later that year, while in Holland one of the guys from the Dutch Psion Club fixed it for me.

Then, wouldn't you know, this year, using my 5mxPro while cycling in southern Sicily, somebody knocked it out of my hand and its keyboard came out when it hit the ground. A repeat of the story above - finally fixed by a guy in the Dutch Psion Club.

I plan on cycling in France next June - sure hope I can keep the Psion healthy on that trip. :-)

OK folks, enough blather.

Season's Greetings and a Happy New Year to all.

Happy Cycling,
Keith

(1) Seasonal greetings to all contributors and the Digest Team.  I really appreciate all the hard work of the Digest Team and have found out many useful things from contributors.  Thanks!

(2) Lithium batteries in a 5mx - Reply to Thomas F. van der Zijden

Previously, in The Digest # 1286, I wrote:

Previously (Digest #1280) I reported that 1 set of Energizer Lithium AA batteries had lasted for over 40 hours in my Psion 5mxPro.  I suspected that Citymaps being open had caused premature failure and I also mentioned that they suffered a very rapid power fall off.  I said I would update readers if the next set provided substantially different results.

Well, today I replaced another set and here are the figures (with previous data in brackets for comparison):

Batteries inserted 4/10 and replaced on 4/11
Time on external power: 552h 20m (925h 22 m)
Time on batteries: 57h 16 m (40h 50 m)
Total battery used: 3099mAh (2502mAh)

I think these results are substantially different in terms of battery life (40% more) and battery power used.  Whether this proves my theory that Citymaps was the cause of premature death of the earlier set is open to conjecture but clearly shows these batteries as being capable of offering almost twice the amount of time available for use as compared with any other battery type I've tried.

The power fall off was much more measured with this set but still more rapid than for alkaline, in fact the end decline was similar to the fairly steep decline of NiMH batteries.  I first got warning (2.5v) before lunch, by early evening they were getting to a dangerously low level (2.3v) So long as you have something like PsiLoc installed, which monitors battery life and warns of low capacity, you'll be ok - otherwise you could be caught out.

I'm going to continue using them because even under high-drain situations their life is significantly better than any other alternative.

With regards to the instant on theme, I find the recent generations of Windows Mobile devices to be very functional as replacements for my Psions.

From a software perspective Mobile Word and Excel are better than the old Epoc Word Sheet, Mobile Outlook and Tasks are good replacements for Agenda, and Contacts is very good. They are much more compatible with their desktop equivalents of course.
There isn't a built-in replacement for Data but are many third party apps that may be useful depending on requirements. Mobile Internet Explorer and Opera are built-in and both have their uses and are better than anything on the Psion. The email client lets me access 6 email accounts on POP3 or IMAP

Hi folks

- especially Itamar, Michael, Rolf -

I just wish to extend greetings for the season that's in it.

I am more or less Psion-less now, just down to an old S7 which has major screen problems.  My present PDA/phone is a HTC Touch Pro2, with OS Windows Mobile 6.5. Prior to that, Nokia N95 8Gb.

I remember this Digest with affection, and would like to wish you all the best.

Regards,

Kevin (Cork, Ireland)

Hi Martin,
you forgot the colon. But even with colon ( SySetSoundEnabled:(0) ), it doesn't work on my 9500.

Nevertheless, as the 9500 and the 9300 are dead machines, I doubt, whether it is worth, that Arjen will fix this bug.
