Dear Peter

I think that you have got a PCI Express slot in your laptop.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExpressCard
The PC card slot is an older version, and has been superseded by the new
PCI Express standard.

My laptop, bought two years ago, came with a PCI Express slot, so my old PCMCIA adaptor for my Compact Flash card,  from my Minolta camera, won't
fit any more.

Hi

I can confirm the n900 does have an IR port near the camera shutter button.

However I have not used it so cannot comment on the usefulness of it or what software other than IR remote controller is available.

Thanks
Craig

The User Manual says:

"None of the pre-installed applications of your device use the infrared port ( on the side) , but it enables the development of third party applications requiring an infra red port. The infrared port is not IrDA compatible."

Any programmers out there?

John

PCMCIA = People Can't Memorise Computer Industry Acronyms (Joke)
These days PCMCIA is the industry body, PC Card is the card and slot.
http://www.pcmcia.org/faq.htm
But watch out for CardBus cards in older PC Card slots (they will not work). Also Express Card (incompatible) is more often encountered now.

PCMCIA is the OLD laptop card standard - most modern laptops ship with PC ExpressCard slots now.

Its possible the OPL runtime may not be available in S60 environments.

You may not be aware that Symbian is now owned by Nokia and is now open source, so symbian.com is now longer being updated. Nokia has centralized
all developer resources at forum.nokia.com.

The old runtime docs are at:
http://developer.symbian.com/main/documentation/runtime_environments/
Looking under "Other" I read:
"OPL began life on the Psion Organiser device in 1984, and is an
extensible, BASIC-like interpreted language purpose-built for Symbian OS.
It is freely downloadable from the open source opl-dev project, but is not available for Symbian OS v9."

Looks like OPL is now an open source project hosted at Sourceforge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/opl-dev/
The current runtimes supported are listed here:
http://www.forum.nokia.com/Tools_Docs_and_Code/Tools/Runtimes/(no mention of OPL).

I dont know what version of S60 runs on the the N97, so I cant tell you if
a runtime for OPL is available.

I'm probably a bit late here . .
the latest laptops do not have a PCMIA card slot or a PC card slot:- - they have a PC Express card slot (which looks similar but is quite different)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExpressCard
The PC Express card comes in two form factors
ExpressCard/34 (34mm wide) - quite a slim socket
and ExpressCard/54 (54mm wide, in an L-shape) - quite a wide socket but with a 'cut in' inside
the internal connector is the same on both (34 mm wide).

A Compact Flash adaptor for a PC Express card slot can be found here: www.usbnow.co.uk
http://www.usbnow.co.uk/p1344/Apiotek_CF_III_%22True_PCI-E_2.5GB/s%22_Express_Card_Adapter/product_info.html
- the url is for the wide version but they also have a slim version

Good luck
