Hi Keith and all
I have a Nokia N97, having waited years for the right combination of features to appear in a phone but I'm bitterly disappointed with it and it will be the last Nokia I buy. I haven't the time to write all about why at the moment and it will be quite a tome if and when I do but this disappointment comes after well over a decade with Nokia spanning 7 models including the N97. I was pretty loyal, based on reliability, usability, functionality, call quality and, latterly, good implementation and development of the Symbian platform, the grandchild of Epoc on Psion. Sad to say the N97 disappoints on all fronts and Nokia has completely lost its way on this platform.
This is made worse still because even now there is nothing that does what the Psion 5mx does but it's completely unsustainable and will have to be retired one day. In spite of my best efforts to find a replacement pocket computer I still use it every day, even though I cannot get it to work with Windows 7 and can only sync my calendar and contacts on Outlook under Win7 - it's impossible to sync e-mail - but that's not a problem limited to Psion, Outlook e-mail cannot be synced under Win7 on any Symbian device either, as far as I can see, because it's now not possible to nominate a default e-mail client in Win7. This is all the beginning of the end I fear. Of course, what I want to do is obviously so obscure and geeky that no manufacturer feels the need to cater for it - all part of the continuing dumbing down so often mentioned on this list. On the other hand, browsing the internet forums, there seem to be plenty of folk that still want to sync their devices...
Cycle on!
I have an E90 and a N97 and love them both. My E90 isn't getting much use right now but its ready to go when I need it. It's a wonderful phone. In my opinion the nearest thing to my old Psion's. If you can use a Psion you can use any of these Nokia phones. Other than updated technology the basics are the same.
I would look on EBay there used to be quite a few there at a decent price. That is where I bought mine. It looked like it just came from the shops, not a mark on it. I even still have my 9300 which is still a great phone and still very applicable today. I think like Psion it was ahead of its time.
To other great phones were my E62 and E71. I sold them but they were also great. As you can tell I am a Nokia fan. I am, but am also a Symbian fan---partially maybe nostalgic.
On the E97, it got a bit of getting used to. Again as I said on the E90, the basics are still the same just getting to know the different form factor a bit. As a matter of fact I went back to my E90 as I wasn't sure how much I really liked the N97. But now its my primary phone. The slide out keyboard works fine for me. You just have to be prepared to use a very few function type buttons to get to numbers, symbols and the upper case key but none are a big deal and if you are going to use more than one of any of the numbers, symbols or capital letters, you can click the button twice and it stays in the mode until to unclick it. And as far as the space bar goes for me it's no bother at all. It's just a little bit to the left and you have to get used to the keyboard a bit anyway so it just one more small thing.
The virtual keyboard works great as does the slide out one. To me it's a typical solid Nokia device. A few weeks ago I installed the latest version of firmware and it made some of the functions even better.
I have seen some articles from some users that don't like the N97, but I haven't found that at all in my case. I do have lots of third party programs and they all work fine. Lots of stuff for the N97.
Thanks,
Bob
